Home School Information

Parents who are interested in home schooling their child may do so upon meeting requirements of Ohio Law and notifying the local school district superintendent. Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center receives and processes the home school notifications. Katie West is MVESC's home school representative and can be reached at 740-452-4518, extension 1178 or katie.west@mvesc.org.

Once all requirements are met, the individual school superintendent will issue a letter to the parent excusing the child from compulsory school attendance. The Home School Notification form is available by clicking here. Once you have completed the form, please submit it with supporting information to:

Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center
205 N. Seventh St.
Zanesville, OH 43701
ATTN: Home School

Important: Parents must renotify their intention to home school EVERY academic year. The academic year is considered August 25 through June 8.

Once the decision is made to home school your child, you are responsible for choosing and providing the curriculum and course of study you will use for your child's education. The Ohio Department of Education recommends that you follow Ohio's academic content standards as a guide. Parents also are responsible to provide results of a standardized test or a written narrative each consecutive year of notification.

Home School vs. Online School

Online schooling is not the same as home schooling. Most online schools are considered community or chartered schools and follow a prescribed course of study. Students who are home schooled will not receive a diploma recognized by the Ohio Board of Education.

Requirements to Home School

  • Notify the school district superintendent every year by submitting information to Muskingum Valley ESC.
  • Provide 900 hours of instruction every year.
  • Provide an assessment or written evaluation of your student's work each year when you renotify the home school representative at Muskingum Valley ESC.

Annual Process for Home Education

  • Within one week of the start of the school year:
    • Parents who reside in a county “local” school district send the Home Education Notification form to David Branch, Superintendent of MVESC (parents who reside in the city of Zanesville should submit to the Zanesville City School superintendent).
  • Within 14 days of receipt of Notification:
    • Superintendent reviews notification, determines if it is in compliance and notifies the parent.
  • At the start of the next school year:
    • Parent or guardian submits the notification form to the appropriate superintendent, along with an Academic Assessment report, one week prior to the beginning of the school.
